Learning Mentor – Alternative Provision

Location: Basildon, Essex
Salary: £21,731–£24,195.50 per annum + up to £2,500 Bonus
Contract: Full-Time, Permanent
Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30am–4:30pm

About the Role

New Chapter Tuition is recruiting a passionate and enthusiastic Learning Mentor to join a specialist Alternative Provision in Basildon, supporting young people aged 11–19 who may have struggled to engage within mainstream education.

This is an exciting opportunity to provide personalised academic, behavioural and pastoral support, helping young people develop confidence, independence and essential skills for their future.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide individual and small-group mentoring to young people with additional learning and behavioural needs.

• Support learners with Functional Skills Maths and English.

• Build positive, trusting relationships to encourage engagement and attendance.

• Support young people with SEND, SEMH and challenging behaviours.

• Deliver engaging activities that promote personal development, confidence and employability.

• Monitor learner progress, behaviour and achievements.

• Maintain a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment.

About You

• Previous experience supporting young people within education, mentoring, youth work or Alternative Provision.

• Understanding of SEND, SEMH and behaviour management strategies.

• Confidence supporting Maths and English at Functional Skills level.

• A patient, resilient and relationship-led approach.

• Strong communication and organisational skills.

• A genuine passion for helping young people overcome barriers to education.

A teaching qualification is not essential. Applications are welcomed from experienced Teaching Assistants, Learning Support Assistants, Youth Workers and Behaviour Mentors.
