Southend-on-Sea is the largest urban area in Essex, a seaside resort of around 182,000 people that was granted city status in 2022. It works as a commuter base for London and as an employment centre in its own right. Local vacancies fall into two broad groups: the hospitality, retail and seasonal work that keeps the seafront running, and a smaller but steady core of healthcare, medical manufacturing and aviation engineering. The largest single employer is Southend University Hospital on Prittlewell Chase in Westcliff-on-Sea (SS0 0RY), run by the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, which advertises clinical, nursing, admin and support roles throughout the year.

After the NHS, medical technology is the main industry. Olympus KeyMed, at KeyMed House on Stock Road (SS2 5QH), develops, manufactures and services endoscopy and other medical equipment, and a number of smaller instrument firms sit around it. Near the airport, on Aviation Way and the Airport Business Park (SS2 6UN), Ipeco builds aircraft crew and executive seating and employs around 600 staff across its Southend campus. London Southend Airport opened a three-aircraft easyJet base on 31 March 2025, which supports ground handling, cabin crew and engineering roles. On the seafront, Adventure Island and the surrounding bars, cafes and hotels drive a seasonal hiring push from spring into summer, and the town's recruitment agencies turn over warehouse, care and hospitality temp work year-round.

Transport is the town's other draw. Two lines run to London: c2c from Southend Central to Fenchurch Street in about an hour, and Greater Anglia from Southend Victoria to Liverpool Street in roughly the same time. The A127 (the Southend Arterial Road) and the A13 both run west towards the M25 at Junction 29. The postcodes cover distinct areas: SS1 and SS2 take in the town centre, Southchurch and the airport; SS0 is Westcliff and Chalkwell; SS3 reaches out to Shoeburyness and the Wakerings.
