Jobs in Basildon

Basildon is one of the post-war new towns, built up from the 1950s on the Essex thameside between the A127 and A13. Its jobs market leans heavily on engineering, manufacturing, logistics and distribution rather than offices. The town's industrial estates - Cranes Farm Road, Pipps Hill and Burnt Mills - hold most of the heavier employers, and live vacancies reflect that: production, warehouse, HGV, technician and skilled-trades roles, with retail and care making up much of the rest.

The largest single employer is Ford's Dunton Technical Centre at Laindon (SS15 6EE), Ford of Europe's main research and engineering campus, with around 4,000 staff. Leonardo runs a defence electronics site at Sigma House on Christopher Martin Road (SS14 3EL), employing about 600 people on thermal imaging, infrared and radar work, on a site Marconi first established in the town in 1954. CNH Industrial's New Holland tractor plant on Cranes Farm Road has produced tractors since 1965 and employs over 1,000 people. Costa's coffee roastery sits nearby on Christopher Martin Road (SS14 3TR), supplied with green beans through Tilbury docks. Add the distribution sheds around Pipps Hill and Burnt Mills, Basildon University Hospital at Nethermayne, and the council and retail jobs around the town centre, and that covers the bulk of local hiring.

Agencies handle a lot of the warehouse, production-line and driving work, much of it filled temp-to-perm through recruiters rather than advertised direct. Basildon station is on the c2c line, which since June 2024 runs four trains an hour off-peak to London Fenchurch Street, with a journey time of about 37 minutes. The A127 meets the M25 at Junction 29 and the A13 at Junction 30, serving both commuters and freight.
