Colchester is a city of roughly 130,000 in north-east Essex, with a wider district population of about 193,000, and England's oldest recorded town. Two things shape the local job market more than anything else: the Army and the public sector. Colchester Garrison, home to 16 Air Assault Brigade at Merville Barracks, is one of the largest single sources of work in the area, both in uniform and through the civilian and contractor jobs around it. Transport: Colchester station (Colchester North) on the Great Eastern Main Line runs fast trains to London Liverpool Street in under 50 minutes, putting the capital within commuting distance. The A12 links north to Ipswich and south to Chelmsford and the M25, and the A120 runs east to Harwich and west towards Stansted Airport.
