Learning Support Assistant

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Learning Support Assistant to support pupils with a wide range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including children and young people who may have experienced trauma and adversity.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is passionate about helping pupils thrive both academically and personally within a nurturing and supportive environment.

The successful candidate will work closely with the SENCo, Senior Leadership Team and teaching staff to deliver tailored educational and emotional support through both one-to-one and group provision.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the holistic development of pupils with SEND and additional needs.
• Build safe, positive and trusting relationships with pupils.
• Support the delivery of learning activities and interventions.
• Assist with planning, preparation and assessment alongside teaching staff.
• Promote positive behaviour in line with school policies and restorative approaches.
• Help pupils develop social, emotional and life skills to support future independence and transitions.
• Work collaboratively with parents/carers and external professionals where required.
• Support safeguarding procedures and maintain a vigilant approach to pupil welfare.
• Attend staff meetings, training and professional development opportunities.
• Provide flexible support across the school as required, including covering for absent colleagues.
• Support off-site educational visits and activities.

Essential Skills & Experience

• A genuine passion for supporting children and young people with additional needs.
• Understanding of the impact of trauma and adversity on child development.
• Ability to remain calm and resilient in a fast-paced and sometimes challenging environment.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Good literacy, numeracy and organisational skills.
• Ability to build positive relationships with pupils, families and colleagues.
• Understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities.
• Ability to effectively manage personal wellbeing in emotionally demanding situations.
• Confidence using ICT to support learning and communication.
• Willingness to participate in training and continued professional development.
• Ability and willingness to use physical intervention, where required, in line with policy and training.

Desirable

• Experience working within a school or SEND environment.
• First Aid qualification.
• Knowledge of behaviour management strategies and reflective practice.
• Understanding of child development and learning processes.
